The Romancecar is the name Odakyu Electric Railway gives to a set of luxury limited express services that connect Shinjuku in Tokyo with holiday destinations like Hakone, Mount Fuji and Enoshima. In this article we will focus on Romancecar services bound for Enoshima.

Odakyu’s #70000 series Romancecar GSE
Enoshima is a seaside resort area in the city of Fujisawa that is popular with daytrippers from Tokyo. This area includes long, sandy beaches, beautiful natural scenery, cultural attractions, and is also closely connected to the main tourist sites of Kamakura by Enoshima Electric Railway.
Key Destinations
Several limited express Romancecar services run from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo all the way to Katase-Enoshima Station, making the full journey in roughly 65 minutes. These services run along the Odakyu Odawara Line and the Odakyu Enoshima Line and stop at the following stations:
Shinjuku > Shin-Yurigaoka > Sagami-Ono > Yamato > Fujisawa > Katase-Enoshima
Because these trains are aimed at holiday-makers, there are many more services scheduled on weekends and national holidays. A small number of Romancecar services run only as far as Fujisawa Station, but from there passengers can easily transfer to the Odakyu Enoshima Line and travel just three more stops to Katase-Enoshima.

Katase-Higashihama Beach at Enoshima

This is a small island with many attractions, including Nakamise-dori shopping street; Enoshima Shrine, which is spread across three locations on the island; the Iwaya Caves, Samuel Cocking Garden and the Enoshima Sea Candle, which is an observation tower offering scenic views over the coastline. The bridge to the island is an 8-minute walk from Katase-Enoshima Station and the bridge itself takes about 3 minutes to cross.
There are two long, sandy beaches on the mainland facing the island of Enoshima. Tickets
To ride on a Romancecar service, you will need a limited express ticket as well as a regular fare ticket. While the regular fare between Shinjuku and Katase-Enoshima is 650 yen, the limited express surcharge is another 750 yen — so your full fare (one-way) would be 1,400 yen.
Tickets for Romancecar services must be reserved in advance but you can buy tickets online via Odakyu’s official English language website.
Discount Tickets
Odakyu’s “Free Pass” discount tickets are a good way to save money as they cover the regular fare and some of the local transport at your destination. However, you will still need to pay your limited express surcharge on top of that.
The Enoshima and Kamakura Free Pass includes a round trip ticket between a departure point on the Odakyu railway network and Fujisawa Station, as well as one day of unlimited rides on the Odakyu Enoshima Line between Fujisawa Station and Katase-Enoshima Station and the Enoshima Electric Railway (also called Enoden). This will give you access to most of the major attractions in both Fujisawa and Kamakura cities.
The Enoshima and Kamakura Free Pass also includes discounts at temples, attractions, restaurants and cafes along the lines covered by the ticket. An example fare from Shinjuku Station on the Odakyu Odawara Line, would be 1,640 yen for adults and 430 yen for children aged under 11. From Fujisawa Station the fare would be 810 yen for adults and 410 yen for children aged under 11. If Odakyu’s Limited Express Romancecar is used, an additional limited express fee will also be necessary.
The Hakone Kamakura Free Pass is a similar discount ticket but it covers the Hakone area as well as the Enoshima-Kamakura area. This is a 3-day ticket that includes unlimited rides on all Odakyu railway lines and the Enoshima Electric Railway, as well as local trains, buses, and cable cars in Hakone. It also includes a sightseeing cruise on Lake Ashi and special discounts at various restaurants and attractions in both areas. And because it covers ALL Odakyu lines, it is useful for sightseeing in Tokyo too!
This pass costs 8,520 yen for adults and 1,980 yen for children. If Odakyu’s Limited Express Romancecar is used, an additional limited express fee will be necessary.
Both of the tickets described above can be bought at vending machines and sightseeing centers at Odakyu stations.
