JR Yokosuka Line for Kamakura, Yokohama and Tokyo

The JR Yokosuka Line runs between Tokyo Station and Kurihama Station in Kanagawa Prefecture. On the way it passes through key destinations such as Shinagawa, Yokohama and Kamakura.

Yokosuka Line Through-Train Services

Two kinds of through-train service pass through the Yokosuka Line: Yokosuka & Sobu Line services and Shonan-Shinjuku Line services.

A Yokosuka and Sobu Line service at Kamakura Station

Yokosuka & Sobu Line through services connect with destinations in Chiba Prefecture and include trains to Narita Airport. These services stop at all stations on the Yokosuka Line and then become rapid services after joining the Sobu Line at Tokyo Station. Services on the Yokosuka and Sobu lines are color-coded blue and white.

Shonan-Shinjuku Line services connect with Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ikebukuro in Tokyo, Omiya in Saitama City, and Utsunomiya in Tochigi Prefecture. These services do not run the full length of the Yokosuka Line, only running between Zushi and Nishi-Oi, but stopping at all stations between. Shonan-Shinjuku Line services are color-coded green and orange.

Key Destinations on the Yokosuka Line

There are 19 stations on the Yokosuka Line between Kurihama and Tokyo.

Kurihama > Kinugasa > Yokosuka > Taura > Higashi-Zushi > Zushi > Kamakura > Kita-Kamakura > Ofuna > Totsuka > Higashi-Totsuka > Hodogaya > Yokohama > Shin-Kawasaki > Musashi-Kosugi > Nishi-Oi > Shinagawa > Shimbashi > Tokyo

Key Yokosuka Line stations are listed below with example fares and journey times given from Kurihama Station.

Kurihama Station

Kurihama Station is the southern terminus of the Yokosuka Line. This station is a two-minute walk from Keikyu-Kurihama Station on the Keikyu Kurihama Line.

Twenty minutes from Kurihama Station is Perry Park, which commemorates the first landing in Japan of the American Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853. Perry and his black ships had sailed to Japan to force the country to end its 220-year-old policy of isolation and open its ports to foreign trade. Inside the park is a small museum and a monument, and just beyond the park is Kurihama Beach.

Kinugasa Station

Exit here for Kinugasayama Park. With over 2,000 cherry trees the park holds a popular cherry blossom festival every spring. There is also an observation deck in the park with views over Yokosuka City, Tokyo Bay and on a good day, Mount Fuji.

Yokosuka Station

This station serves the port city of Yokosuka. Activities and attractions in this city include the Cruise of Yokosuka Naval Port around the Japanese and American Naval base, and the floating museum ship Mikasa, a warship that served in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. Yokosuka is also the birthplace of the sukajan — a type of colorful embroidered satin jacket that you can buy as a souvenir on Dobuita Street. Dobuita Street is also well known for its lively American-style pubs and restaurants.

Zushi Station

This station serves the city of Zushi. This is a pleasant seaside city with a beach that is very popular in the summer.

Zushi Station is the terminal station for Shonan-Shinjuku Line through services.

Kamakura Station

Kamakura is a small seaside city with many historic temples, shrines, museums as well as fine natural scenery and beaches.

Kamakura Station is convenient for dining and shopping on the Komach-dori and Wakamiya Oji shopping streets and it is within walking or cycling distance of several sites of interest such as Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Kamakura Museum of National Treasures and Kamakura Museum of History and Culture.

To see the Great Buddha of Kotoku-in Temple or to reach other popular destinations like Yuigahama Beach, transfer at Kamakura Station to the Enoden Line.

Kita-Kamakura Station

Kita-Kamakura Station serves the northern part of Kamakura City. There are several historic and very beautiful Buddhist temples in this area. Engakuji is a major Zen Buddhist temple founded in 1282. Among the structures in this large temple complex, the Shariden (or hall of relics) and the Ogane (or great bell) are both designated National Treasures. Kenchoji Temple was founded in 1253 and is the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan. Tokeiji Temple was founded in 1285 and was formerly a sanctuary for abused wives. Jochiji is a small, peaceful temple with a pretty garden that was founded in 1283. Meigetsuin is a Zen temple founded in 1160 which is famous for its large hydrangea garden.

Ofuna Station

Exit here for Ofuna Kannon Temple: a 25 meter high statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, which is a 5 minute walk from the station. Josenji Temple and the Taya Caves are a 14 minute bus ride from Ofuna Station. The monks of Josenji dug the meditation caves into a limestone hill and decorated their interiors with Buddhist carvings.

Transfers can be made here to the following JR lines: the Tokaido Main Line, the Negishi Line, and the Yokohama Line as well as the Narita Express. This station is also directly connected to the Ofuna Station on the Shonan Monorail, which runs from Ofuna to Shonan-Enoshima Station.

Totsuka Station

Transfers can be made here to the JR Tokaido Main Line, the Narita Express and Yokohama Municipal Subway’s Blue Line.

Yokohama Station

Yokohama is a major port city located to the south of Tokyo. Yokohama’s attractions include Yokohama Chinatown, the Yamate historic western settlement district, Sankeien Garden, Cosmoworld Amusement Park, and the Nippon Maru Museum Ship.

Yokohama Station is a major transportation hub serving six lines operated by JR, four lines operated by private railway companies, and one line of the city’s subway system.Transfers can be made here to the following JR lines: the Negishi Line, the Keihin-Tohoku Line, the Yokohama Line and the Tokaido Main Line, as well as the Narita Express. Transfers can also be made to the Keikyu Main Line, the Minatomirai Line, the Tokyu Toyoko Line, the Sotetsu Main Line and Yokohama Municipal Subway’s Blue Line.

  Train time: 59 minutes

Musashi-Kosugi Station

Transfer here to the JR Nambu Line.

Shinagawa Station

Shinagawa Station is convenient for Sengakuji Temple, which holds the tombs of the legendary 47 Ronin. This group of heroic samurai gave their lives to avenge the death of their master, and their story became a popular topic of kabuki drama and bunraku puppet plays. The temple is a 15 minute walk north of Shinagawa Station.

Shinagawa Station serves the Tokaido Shinkansen Line making it a major transportation hub in Tokyo. Transfers can also be made here to the JR Yamanote Line, the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, the JR Tokaido Line, and the Keikyu Main Line.

Shimbashi Station

The Shimbashi district is mostly known for its cheap and cheerful izakaya restaurants. Outside the west side of Shimbashi Station is a popular meeting spot called SL Square where an old steam locomotive dating from 1945 is on permanent display. Grand Hammer is a new dining and entertainment complex one minute from Shimbashi Station, which includes lively restaurants, bars, stage shows, a sauna, and a traditional banquet hall with geisha entertainment.

Transfers can be made here to the JR Yamanote Line, the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, the JR Tokaido Line, the JR Ueno-Tokyo Line, Tokyo Metro’s Ginza Line and Asakusa Line, and the Yurikamome automated transit system.

Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station is the northern terminus of the Yokosuka Line and a major interchange station. This is the main Shinkansen terminal for Tokyo receiving inter-city bullet train services on the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Tohoku Shinkansen, the Joetsu Shinkansen, and the Hokuriku Shinkansen.

Through services on the Yokosuka Line continue on the Sobu Line from here. Transfers can also be made here for local services on the JR Yamanote Line, the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, the JR Chuo Line, the JR Tokaido Line, the JR Ueno-Tokyo Line, the JR Keiyo Line and the subway Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line.

Tokyo Station is convenient for Tokyo Imperial Palace, some gardens of which are accessible to the public. Also nearby is the nearby Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, which exhibits mainly 19th century European art. The Marunouchi district on the west side of Tokyo Station is a commercial district with many high rise buildings packed with shops, cafes, and restaurants.

The Tokyo Station Hotel is a luxury heritage property inside Tokyo Station’s historic red-brick Marunouchi Building, combining classic European elegance with direct access to Japan’s busiest rail hub.
